The Weight of Being Perfect: Debunking the Model Minority Myth

For many South Asian teens, the pressure to be perfect is nonstop—get the grades, make your parents proud, never mess up, and definitely don’t talk about how hard it is. But that weight adds up—and most of us carry it in silence.

In this Youth Unwind Hour, psychiatrist Dr. Apurva Bhatt joins us for a real conversation about where these expectations come from, how they affect our mental health, and what we can do to start letting go of the pressure.

We’ll talk about:

  • Why perfection feels like the only option and where that message comes from
  • How staying silent takes a toll on your mental and emotional health
  • Tools to cope and start building a stronger sense of self
  • What we wish someone had told us when we were younger
