Cultural aspects experienced by those affected by anorexia

Cultural aspects experienced by those affected by anorexia. Anorexia has been around since the Hellenistic era when it has always had positive undertones. With anorexia, not only does one experience societal stigma but also self-stigmatization. The trifecta of anorexia is the restriction of energy for the body, intense fear of gaining weight, and how one perceives their body and shape.

Adolescents who are most affected by anorexia tend to be more perfectionistic, and anxious, express OCD traits, don’t like taking risks, and feel unsafe in their own bodies. As a result, food becomes the most readily available tool that gets weaponized.
